When Bad Things Happen
Why do bad things happen to good people? There have been sermons preached and books written and long discussions about this question. Instead of trying to answer it, I’m going to tell you a story. I think I’m a good person. Not a perfect person, and maybe not even a person some people like to be around. I hope that when I’m no longer taking up space on this earth that when people talk about me, they will say that she was a good person. Many not-so-great things have happened to me in my life. Some happened because I made wrong choices. But most of the really bad things that happened had nothing to do with the choices I made. In 2015 I had a really bad thing happen. Gary and I were on our way home from a lovely day at the beach. We were stopped at a red [...]
What Color is God’s Love?
What Color is God's Love? by Xochitl Dixon is such a beautiful book. This is a book that radiates joy from the cover to the illustrations to each perfectly chosen word. We can't force people to care about the earth, the plants, the water, the birds, or the animals. But this book can make us want to love our earth. We can't legislate kindness. But we can weave it into our stories and the books we read for our kids and grand kids and students so that they understand that every skin tone in our world is beautiful and special. All around us we hear people talking about diversity and inclusion and when I read this amazingly special book it hit me like never before. God is and always has been and always will be our world's chief diversity officer. In these few short pages, with the most glorious illustrations [...]

Let's just say I felt like my nine-year-old self the summer when all the mommies pulled their kids out of the public swimming pool because my siblings and I went in on a hot day to cool off. On that day we were the only kids who weren't white. And when we jumped in I guess the mothers thought it was wrong that their precious boys and girls be forced to share their space with people who they did not feel were their equal. Or something like that. I remember how it felt to be treated as less than. And that's how I felt last week when an incident happened in the pool. The details don't matter. There was a bully, he told me to my face he did what he did because I was a [...]
Arthur the King
I write books about rescue dogs and so I get a lot of dog stuff in my Facebook feed. I also post dog memes and photos of rescue dogs and so it’s not surprising that [...]
Never Somehow Becoming Forever.
We saw the house in September of 2016. It was a horrible house buying experience including identity theft, having to go through two different lenders but it was so complicated it's too exhausting to share [...]
Epic Exchanges
I have done quite a number of podcasts about dogs, dogs and depression, moving to a new place and starting over as a senior, gardening, more dogs, and a wide variety of topics. I can [...]
